International Year of Chemistry in China

From May 28th to 30 th, the most important meeting in the field of quantum chemistry in China: "The 11 th National Conference of Quantum Chemistry" was held in Empark Grand Hotel of Binhu New District,Hefei City. The conference was organized by Chinese Chemical Society, and hosted by School of Chemistry and Material Science of University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) and Hefei National Laboratory for Physical Sciences at the Microscale. 

At the opening ceremony, Professor Xu Wu, the Party Secretary of USTC delivered a welcome address. Academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences including Jiang Yuansheng, He Guozhong, Li Lemin, Zhu Qingshi, Wu Yundong and academician of Taiwan Academy Sinica Lin shengxian also attended the meeting and delivered important speeches. The ceremony was hosted by Professor Yang Jinlong, Dean of School of Chemistry and Material Science of USTC.

The first “National Quantum Chemistry Conference” was held in Shanghai, 1977. Since then, it was held every three years and now has become an very important platform for the academic communication and discussion in the field of quantum chemistry. This meeting fully demonstrated the latest achievements in the field of quantum chemistry, which mainly covers the following areas: the theory of quantum chemistry and calculation methods; electronic structure and spectra calculation of molecular, clusters and solid etc.; theoretical study of the mechanism of catalytic reaction, the excited state of molecular and the mechanism of chemical reaction; the relationships between structures and characters of various materials and their theoretical designs; theoretical studies and application of reaction dynamics; the application of Quantum chemistry and molecular modeling in the biological, environmental and energy areas and other researches on the theoretical and computational chemistry.

The 11th conference is the largest and most influential one ever since 1977 . More than 1200 people from about 200 domestic and foreign universities or institutes were involved in the conference. 15 conference reports, 80 Invited reports, 44 Oral reports, 440 Post reports and more than 700 paper-abstracts were covered during the conference. In addition, commissioned by the National Natural Science Foundation Division of Chemistry, the conference also invited some outstanding experts and scholars to attend a seminar of "international year of chemistry in China - the seminar about the trends and prospects of theoretical chemistry development."

2011 is the International Year of Chemistry Specified by the 63rd United Nations General Assembly, during which, people from all over the world hold different activities or conferences on chemistry to celebrate the achievements of world chemistry. The conference is one of  the important parties of "International Chemical Year in China" activities.
